"This is a big TV!" 2008-06-11
By Charlie Bouffard (Benicia CA)
I had a beautiful Sony WEGA 40 inch picture tube TV. But I wanted to go bigger. This 63 inch Samsung Plasma TV seemed to fit the bill. Amazon was offering free up-scaling DVD player with the purchase of a new Samsung TV. No sales tax, free delivery, what could go wrong? Everything. I didn't read the fine print that I had to purchase the TV from Amazon not through Amazon. I used an Amazon reseller OneCall. I cancelled the DVD player and emailed Amazon to ask why it wasn't free. I was very impressed to get an answer back in 10 minutes explaining that because I picked a reseller (cheaper price) that I wasn't qualified for the Amazon offer. I have to admit that I love Amazon.com. I am a long time faithful fan. OneCall was also great. They gave me a 30 minute window for delivery. I work 15 minutes from home and they agreed to call me at work 30 minutes before the truck arrived. This is a 200 pound TV so I had to find a stand/table to hold it. That was not easy so keep that in mind. Had to line up help to get TV carried upstairs and carry old 350 pound Sony TV downstairs. Hooked up my cable and turned it on and was very disappointed with the picture. And I mean very disappointed since the Sony TV always had a beautiful picture. I don't have digital Cable. I have only the basic plan. And what I did not realize until then, is that if you try and stretch a 480i analog signal to fit a large (in my case 63") screen it will not look good. For 30 minutes I changed channels and got more and more depressed. I then hooked up this little 3 foot antenna wire to the TV antenna input and was surprise to see almost 40 channels show up. Including about a dozen digital ones. Some in 1080i. And that is when I fell in love with this TV. All the digital channels looked great and the 1080i ones were unbelievable. Now I have an antenna on the roof. My wife and I were watching CSI in 1080i the other night and had to turn our heads when they were doing an autopsy and cutting open a body. The picture details were so vivid it was unreal. Even the 480i digital channels look very good. We are very happy with this TV. It has picture in picture which is a feature we wanted and not all plasmas we looked at seem to have. In February 2009 all over-the-air broadcasts will be digital so all 40 stations will come in clear. One advantage of digital broadcasts is it either comes in perfect or it doesn't come in. No snow, or lines, or weak reception. I recommend this Samsung TV but only if you get some sort of digital service to go with it. We are shopping for a Blue-Ray player, and will eventually sign up for one of the digital satellite services with a DVR.

First, the product itself:

The FP-T6374 is a 63" 1080p plasma display panel from Samsung. At this size, the 2 million plus pixels provided by the 1080p resolution can truly be appreciated. Color reproduction is extraordinary, the factory provided "Movie" mode and "Warm 1" color tone provide cinema style color reproduction without too much "monkey"-ing with the settings, but if you do wish to "monkey" with the settings, Samsung has included a plethora of picture and color settings to allow anyone to tweak the display settings to their satisfaction. The set even accepts 1080p/24hz input (though how it then displays it is a matter up for debate.) The blacks may not be as deeps as the Pioneer Kuro but, in my estimation, they are deeper than it's Panasonic competitor. Regardless, the blacks are true enough to please the most discriminating eye in all but the darkest rooms. Aesthetically, the high gloss black bezel is very attractive and fitting for a display of this price point. Unfortunately, the speakers hidden underneath the bezel are not removeable and result in a very thick bottom bezel. Truthfully, I doubt that many folks buying a display of this size and cost will be using the built in speakers; so, in my opinion, they should have been removeable. The neat blue LED that surrounds the power button can be set to display while the display is on, while the display if off, or not at all. The display is packaged on a sturdy and attactive stand that swivels smoothly to the desired angle. The display is wall-mountable with a mount such as the Sanus VMPL3B but, if you choose to wall-mount it as I did, be prepared to have AT LEAST two strong individuals to lift the display onto the wall as it weighs approximately 150 lbs without the stand.

Now, the manufacturer:

Samsung is reputable consumer electronics giant and, for the most part, their products are excellent. Overall, this display seems to be no exception, as the vast majority of these sets seem to be problem free.

A word of warning though for those who might purchase a set, such as I, with a defect: Samsung's customer service is bureaucratic and inefficent. The representatives are always polite and courteous and make a genuine attempt to help you, but they have little power to get anything done. Samsung, like most manufacturers, contracts their in-home service out to local contractors. Thus, the quality of service will be dependent on the quality of your local contractors. In my case, that quality was very poor. My first set arrived with a defect that caused it to overheat to the point that the set would begin to flash before finally shutting itself off after a few hours of use. The set would become so hot to the touch that trying to put your hand against the metal back casing would cause you to instinctively jerk your hand away. I have been told that this can be caused by a bad power board that can also cause damage to the other internal electronics and the plasma display itself. Unfortunately, do to the size and heft of this set, 3 local contractors declined to service the display. At this point, Samsung agreed to replace the display; the problem is that nearly two months had passed. Samsung stated that the replacement display would arrive in a painful "30 to 45 business days" (4-6 weeks!) Thankfully, my replacement arrived in a reasonable 2 weeks via white glove service. I am happy to say that my new display has been flawless for 3 weeks and I am relatively confident that it will continue to be trouble-free.

In conclusion, this display is a phenomemal deal for the money. The picture quality is among the best out there. Most likely, you will get a trouble-free display and never regret your purchase but, if you get a defective display, there may be several weeks or months of heart ache before Samsung finally makes things right.

"Great TV - Great Price" 2008-05-20

Fantastic TV and fantastic service from Amazon. Best price to boot! Delivery was quick and well ahead of the estimated scheduled time. The only negative issue I have about the delivery was that only one delivery person showed up and I had to help carry the TV upstairs to the media room on the second floor.

Which brings me to the only negative issue with the TV - it's heavy at 195 pounds! Otherwise the TV is great. Hookup to my home theater was a breeze and the picure out of the box is perfect. I may forgo calibrating it - it's that good.

"Great picture... If it worked..." 2008-05-06
By Thomas J. Kuhn (Orlando, Florida)
I purchased this TV and had it delivered on a Thursday. I was so excited when it arrived... I unpacked it, tested it out and everything looked great! By Saturday it was on the wall and looking good. I will say the picture was fantastic. I hooked up the PS3 and watched some BD material and could not have been happier. That is until I noticed a weird glitch. Sometimes when I turned it on, it would cycle power once or twice (You can hear the power relay clicking on then off) Well now it is Tuesday, and that is all the TV will do when you attempt to turn it on. It will continuously cycle between on and off. This only happened occasionally at first. By today, Tuesday, you never get a picture. It basically does not work. Today I called Samsung, and was told that repair personnel will call me within one to two days. I think that sucks when I just paid $4000+ for TV. IT IS ONLY 5 DAYS OLD!! I am without a TV until then. What happens if this happens again once I am out of warranty? Screwed...

I owned a Samsung TV quite a while ago, and it failed on me too. I thought that I would give them another shot, but no more after this. Go out and get a Panasonic or Pioneer. I think you will be happier in the long run (or short run in my case) Remember... 5 Days...

"Nice Picture... when it works" 2008-05-02
By Benjamin J. Ruesga (Phoenix, az United States)
I would give this no stars if I could. I have had nothing but problems with this television and Samsung in general. I am on my 3rd round of replacement parts with this. It started shutting itself off and on by itself 3 days after I bought it. The repair lasted about 6 months, then the problem just recently started again. I just had the plasma panel replaced...everything except for the housing. And it is still screwed up. Now I have a 4"x10" vertical line with a laser-like line up the middle of it. Yeesh, this thing sucks! I would say I just had a bad apple, but I also bought the Hp-4252 for my home and 4 for work. In just over a year, they all had problems with laser lines and black sections. Those were just out of warranty of course. STAY AWAY FROM SAMSUNG PLASMA DISPLAYS. Buy any other brand.
